You press the brake, push the shifter button, and the lever won’t move. Before you assume the transmission is dying, know this: in the overwhelming majority of cases, this is an electrical fault in a safety system, not a mechanical transmission failure. Why Is Your Car Stuck in Park

Every automatic built since the early 1990s uses a brake-shift interlock (BSI), sometimes called brake-transmission shift interlock (BTSI). It exists so the car can’t be accidentally bumped into Drive or Reverse while it’s sitting still. Three things have to work together for it to release: a battery with enough voltage, a brake light switch that confirms you’re pressing the pedal, and a shift interlock solenoid that physically unlocks the shifter. 3. Faulty Brake Light Switch

This is the single most common cause on this list, and it’s also the cheapest to fix. The switch sits at the top of the brake pedal arm and reports pedal position to the solenoid. 6. Shift Cable Linkage or Clip Failure

Owners have reported this on higher-mileage Mercedes-Benz models with column and console shifters alike. It presents almost identically to a broken cable, and the fix is a linkage repair rather than a full cable replacement. 7. Parked on a Steep Incline

Parking on a hill loads extra weight onto the parking pawl, the small metal tooth that locks the transmission’s output shaft. Enough pressure can wedge that pawl tight enough that it won’t release cleanly. Fix: No parts needed. Set the parking brake before shifting into Park next time, so the pawl carries less of the load. Rocking the car gently forward and back with the parking brake engaged can sometimes free a pawl that’s already bound up.

8. Shift-By-Wire or Electronic Gear Selector Fault

On 2018-and-newer vehicles with electronic shifters, there’s no physical cable connecting lever to transmission at all — sensors and a control module do the job. A weak 12V battery, a faulty brake pedal position sensor, or a fault in the transmission control module can all lock the system in Park even when every dash light looks normal. This is the newest wrinkle in an old problem, and it’s one most stuck-in-park guides don’t cover in any depth, since it barely existed five years ago. Cost: Highly variable — a sensor fault can be a $150–$300 fix, while a control module issue can run well into four figures. This is not a DIY diagnosis; it needs a scan tool.

Car Brake Pedal

If you own a code reader or your shop pulls codes as part of diagnosis, a few show up specifically in stuck-in-park cases:

  • P0571: Brake switch A circuit malfunction — points straight at the brake light switch.
  • P0705: Transmission range sensor circuit malfunction — the PRNDL sensor isn’t reporting a valid gear position, common on both cable and shift-by-wire systems.
  • Codes in the P06Ex / P1Ex range on some hybrids and EVs point to the power inverter module or auxiliary transmission fluid pump control module rather than anything in the traditional interlock system.

Pulling codes before you approve a repair can save you from paying for a solenoid when the actual fault is a sensor or a wiring short.

A regular customer called in a panic from a grocery store parking lot — shifter locked in Park, brake pedal doing nothing. Dash lights were bright, so the battery was fine.
