If you smell something sweet — like maple syrup or cotton candy — you have a coolant leak. Coolant is ethylene glycol, and it has a distinct sweet odor. Steam rising from the engine bay is another dead giveaway.

If the idle is rough, the car stalls at stoplights, or the check engine light is on — especially codes P0171 or P0174 — you have a vacuum leak. The engine is pulling in unmetered air after the mass airflow sensor, and the computer can’t correct the fuel mixture fast enough.

After shutdown, the system depressurizes through the weakest point. If that point is a hose, you’ll hear a steady hiss and probably see steam. If it’s the reservoir cap, the hiss is brief and normal. If it’s a head gasket, you may hear bubbling in the overflow tank — that’s combustion pressure entering the cooling system, and it’s bad.

3. Exhaust Leak

The brake booster uses engine vacuum to amplify your pedal pressure. A torn diaphragm or cracked vacuum line causes a constant hiss — often louder inside the car than outside. If the pedal is hard and stopping distances are longer, this is your problem.

This is not a “drive it carefully” situation. Without brake assist, your stopping power is reduced by roughly 70%. In an emergency, you will not stop in time.

5. Turbocharger or AC System Leak

Turbocharged engines pressurize the intake to 8–20 PSI. After hard driving, the intercooler and piping are heat-soaked. When you shut down, metal contracts and boost pressure escapes through loose clamps, cracked silicone couplers, or a failing blow-off valve. The hiss is usually brief but sharp.
