The good news: you can usually narrow the cause down to one or two parts in about 30 seconds, without any tools. The trick is paying attention to when it grinds — sitting still or only while you’re moving.

Wheel bearings and CV axles are nearly silent when the car isn’t rolling, so you can set those aside.

It only grinds while turning and moving (parked test is quiet): now you’re looking at a rolling part — most likely a worn wheel bearing or a failing CV axle. These need the wheel spinning under load to make noise.

It grinds only at full lock (wheel turned all the way): this is its own clue. At the extreme angle, a worn CV axle strains hardest, or a tire may be rubbing a wheel-well liner or the suspension. Note whether it happens turning left, right, or both.

Write down which bucket you fall into. That alone cuts the suspect list roughly in half before you touch a single part.

Almost every article tells you to “check your power steering fluid” — but that advice is only right for some cars. Before you go hunting for a reservoir, know which type of steering you have.

Hydraulic power steering uses a belt-driven pump, fluid, and a reservoir under the hood. These systems do have fluid you can check, and low or contaminated fluid is a genuine cause of noise (usually a whine or groan that can turn into a grind as the pump starts to seize).

Electric power steering (EPS) uses an electric motor on the steering column or rack — no pump, no fluid, no reservoir. A large share of cars built in roughly the last decade use it. If that’s your car, there is no fluid to top up, and any grinding from the steering itself points to the motor, column, or rack rather than a fluid level.

Not sure which you have? Pop the hood and look for a power steering reservoir (often labeled), or check your owner’s manual. If there’s no reservoir and no belt-driven pump, you have electric steering — skip the fluid checks entirely and focus on the mechanical causes below.

Steering Wheel Hard to Turn at Low Speeds

Here are the real culprits, with the two most common first:

Low or contaminated power steering fluid (hydraulic systems). Low fluid lets air into the system, and old, dirty fluid loses its lubricating quality. Either can cause a groan that grinds, along with stiff or notchy steering. This is the cheapest and most DIY-friendly cause — but only on hydraulic cars.

A worn wheel or hub bearing. Bearings let the wheel spin with almost no friction. When one wears out, it grinds or hums, and the noise typically changes as you turn (loading one side more than the other) or with speed. Often paired with slightly vague handling or uneven tire wear. This is a common source and a safety item.

A failing CV axle or joint. The constant-velocity joints let the drive axle flex as the wheels turn. A worn one usually clicks or pops on turns — especially tight, low-speed turns — more than it grinds, but a badly worn joint or a torn boot that’s let grit in can grind, especially at full lock.

A failing power steering pump (hydraulic). If the fluid is full and clean but you still hear grinding while turning parked, the pump itself may be seizing. It often whines first, then grinds as it fails.

A dry or worn strut mount / strut bearing. The strut’s top mount includes a bearing that lets the strut rotate as you steer. When it dries out or wears, it grinds, creaks, or clunks when you turn — and you’ll usually hear it turning the wheel while parked.

A worn ball joint or tie rod end. These steering and suspension joints can grind, creak, or clunk as they wear, and a worn ball joint is a genuine safety concern because it connects the wheel to the suspension.

A dry steering column or intermediate shaft. Some cars develop a dry, grinding or notchy feel in the column or the U-jointed shaft between the wheel and the rack. Owners often notice it eases briefly after lubricant is worked in — a telltale sign it’s the shaft, not the wheels.

Match your 30-second test result to this list: parked-grind points to 1, 4, 5, 6, or 7; moving-only grind points to 2 or 3.

Half of misdiagnosis comes from calling every steering noise a “grind.” The exact sound points to a different part:

Grind or hum that rises with speed and shifts as you turn: classic wheel bearing. It’s there while driving, not just turning.

Sharp click or pop on turns, quieting when you straighten out: classic CV joint/axle — not really a grind at all.

Whine or groan that rises and falls with steering effort, worst at full lock parked:power steering (low fluid or a tiring pump on hydraulic systems).

Check the fluid (hydraulic cars only). Find the power steering reservoir, wipe the cap, and check the level and color. Low or dark, burnt-smelling fluid points to the power steering system. No reservoir? You have electric steering — skip to step 3.

Test each direction parked. Turn slowly all the way left, then all the way right. If it grinds worse in one direction or only at full lock, note it — that points toward a CV axle or a tire/liner rub on that side.

Test while rolling slowly. In an empty lot, drive slowly and make gentle left and right turns. A grind or hum that shows up only while moving, and gets louder as you speed up or load one side, is a wheel bearing. A rhythmic click on turns is a CV joint.

Do the sway test for a bearing. At low speed, gently weave left and right. If the noise gets louder turning one way and softer the other, that’s a strong sign of a wheel bearing on the side that quiets when unloaded.

Rock and listen while parked. With the engine off, grab the top of each front tire and rock it. Play or a clunk can point to a worn bearing, ball joint, or tie rod end — the suspension-joint causes.

If you can tell a shop “it grinds only while moving and turning left, louder with speed,” you’ve basically handed them the diagnosis — and made it much harder to be sold parts you don’t need.

It depends entirely on the cause, so use this as your guide:

Low power steering fluid (hydraulic), mild whine-grind: generally safe short-term. Top up the correct fluid and monitor. If it drains again, you have a leak to fix.

Dry strut mount or steering column noise, steering feels normal: usually safe to drive to a shop, but get it looked at.

Wheel bearing grinding: treat as urgent. A failing bearing can overheat, seize, or in the worst case let the wheel wobble or come loose. Don’t put off a bearing.

Ball joint grinding: urgent. A ball joint that fails can separate the wheel from the suspension. Have it inspected right away.

CV axle clicking/grinding: drivable for a short while, but a neglected CV axle can eventually fail and leave you stranded. Fix it soon.

Power steering pump seizing: get it addressed promptly, since losing assist while driving makes the wheel suddenly heavy.

Rule of thumb: fluid and mild steering-system noises give you some time; anything involving a bearing, ball joint, or CV axle is a safety item — don’t wait.

Two things to keep in mind. First, an alignment (about $80–$150) is often recommended after replacing tie rods, ball joints, or anything that affects steering geometry. Second, don’t let a small noise snowball — a torn CV boot caught early is a cheap reboot, but ignored until grit destroys the joint, it becomes a full axle replacement.

Honest rule of thumb: fluid and light lubrication are fair DIY territory, and they cover the cheapest causes. Once a repair carries the weight of the car or affects steering geometry — bearings, ball joints, tie rods, CV axles — that’s shop work for safety’s sake.

Service your power steering fluid on schedule (hydraulic cars) so it doesn’t run low or turn to grit.

Check your CV boots at oil changes — a torn boot is a cheap fix, but a neglected one destroys the joint.

Address small noises early — a creak or whine caught now is far cheaper than the grind it becomes.

None of this is expensive, and it keeps steering both quiet and safe.

It depends on the cause. A mild power steering whine from low fluid gives you some time. But a wheel bearing, ball joint, or CV axle is a safety item — a failing bearing can seize and a bad ball joint can let the wheel separate from the suspension. If your grind traces to any of those, get it inspected right away.

At full lock, a worn CV axle is bent to its sharpest angle and strains hardest, so a failing one often grinds there. It can also be a tire rubbing a wheel-well liner or a suspension part at the extreme of its travel. Note whether it happens turning left, right, or both to help pin it down.

Don’t panic at a grinding noise when turning — diagnose it.
