The same “knock” can be a worn rod bearing that needs a new engine, or a $50 heat shield, or a solenoid that ticks only at idle and quiets the moment you drive off. The difference isn’t luck; it’s in how the knock behaves.

Exhaust heat shield or loose bracket. A tinny rattle or knock at idle from the vibration, not from inside the engine at all. One of the cheapest fixes there is.

Stretched or slipped timing chain (or worn belt/tensioner). A knock or rattle, often loudest at idle or start-up, from a worn timing chain and tensioner. More common on higher-mileage engines and a bigger job to fix.

The good news buried in that list: the bottom four are usually affordable, and several of them show up only at idle — exactly the pattern that scares people but often means the least.

None of these is an engine-ending problem. If your knock lives at idle and vanishes on the move, the odds are strongly in your favor.

Here’s the full sequence to place a knock at idle:

Check the oil. Level, condition, and the oil-pressure light. Top up or change with the correct grade, then re-listen. If the light is on, stop here and don’t drive.

Do the rev test. With the car parked, gently raise the RPM and listen. Does the knock speed up with the revs? Does it fade or disappear off idle? Speeding up points to something internal or RPM-linked; fading off idle points to the good-news bucket.

Do the load test (carefully). On a normal drive, notice whether the knock worsens under acceleration or load. Worse under load leans toward rod knock; unchanged leans away from it.

Locate the sound. With a stethoscope or long screwdriver, listen low on the block (rod knock), up at the valve cover (lifters), and at the front accessories (pulley, tensioner, compressor).

Check for a ping under acceleration. A rattling ping only under load points to detonation — try a tank of the correct-octane fuel and see if it improves.

Scan for codes. A quick code scan can flag VVT, timing, or misfire issues that line up with the noise.

If you can tell a shop “it’s a deep knock, low in the block, that gets worse when I accelerate,” or “it only knocks at idle and goes away when I rev,” you’ve handed them the diagnosis — and protected yourself from paying for the wrong repair.
